Heacham In Bloom presents award to Norfolk Lavender

Susan Richardson, Chairman of Heacham In Bloom, and Philippa Sewell, Secretary, presents award to Norfolk Lavender's Peter Mortin

It has been a great year for Norfolk Lavender which is the result of a lot of hard work as part of a campaign to rejuvenate the gardens and the brand itself over the past few years.

As the season drew to a close it became known that Norfolk Lavender was awarded the honour of “Best Commercial Premises” for Anglia In Bloom having been entered into the reknowned competition by the Heacham In Bloom Committee.  Heacham In Bloom, represented by Chairman, Susan Richardson, and Secretary, Philippa Sewell, presented the Manager of Norfolk Lavender with a wooden plaque to commemorate their win.

Peter Mortin of Norfolk Lavender said:  ”We are over the moon with the award and the judges recognition of our achievements at the Norfolk Lavender site in Heacham.  Our team of staff have worked so hard over the last two years since the company was bought out of administration, by a local family, to transform the grounds, gardens and attractions on site. We have such a wonderful site here around the old water mill and the re-planted gardens and newly landscaped grounds with the new Rare Breed Animal Centre and new lavender oil distillery are something that we are really proud of.”

Mr Mortin went on to say: “We have great plans for the future with a new lavender field being planted which will allow visitors to actually walk through a lavender field here at Heacham for the first time ever opening in summer 2011.  A massive 8,500 sq foot indoor childrens play area will be opening this Autumn making Norfolk Lavender an even more attractive place for families to visit.  We have also begun planning our plant displays for next year.”

This year, Norfolk Lavender also opened its Rare Breeds Centre which added a whole new facet to this long established Norfolk attraction.  The Rare Breed Animal Centre has become a firm favourite with visitors to the area and locals alike.  It offers a great place to entertain the children at a reasonable cost Family tickets being only £ 10-00 for up to 6.

The animal centre has two levels of appeal.  Firstly, there is the whole range of wonderfully cute farm animals including pigs, sheep, goats, cows, donkey, pony, alpacas, wallabies, turkeys, ducks, and masses of poultry which the younger children will fall in love with.  Secondly, many of these animals have stories behind them and this is most likely to intrigue the older visitor.

The Rare Breed Animal Centre was set up within the guidelines of the Rare Breed Survival Trust and Norfolk Lavender have also tried to set up breeding programmes for some farm animals which are on the endangered species list.  There are animals ranging from “at risk”, “endangered” to “critically at risk” where there is a real risk that without active help these animals could indeed become extinct.

Amongst the cute pigs you find here, there are curly coated pigs which are related to the Lincolnshire long wooled pig which died out in the UK – these little fellas have coats almost like that of a sheep. One of the sheep breeds kept in the Rare Breed Animal Centre are Hungarian Screw Horned Sheep which are so rare there are only 6 in the whole country.  Norfolk Lavender are keeping their fingers crossed that they may breed this year.

Within the centre’s mass of poultry (over 20 types) you will find such rarieties as Sultans (critical on the “at risk” list).  Norfolk Lavender are having real success with breeding these birds and are now able to pass young birds on to other breeders.  There are too many animals to name them all so why not come and see for yourselves the amazing range of farm animals.

The 2010 Lavender Festival also attracted thousands of visitors and they were blessed with a gloriously sunny weekend to also celebrate the first weekend of the harvest.  People travelled for miles to visit Heacham and see the Lavender in all its glory.  The event offered a craft fair, live music, performances by the well known Lavender Hill Mob, face painting and an owl display, birds of prey demonstrations and food tastings at the newly opened Walsingham Farms Shop.  Norfolk Lavender also had a new distillery in operation for the weekend.  The event also raised £1000 for Tapping House Hospice.  Soon after the Lavender Festival, Unique opened its doors at Norfolk Lavender offering a selection of quality, individual items for completing that special look for any home, office or business environment.

On September 24th, 25th and 26th 2010, three of the UK’s best loved comedians – Eddie Izzard, Dylan Moran and Reginald D Hunter, took to the stage together in the glorious surroundings of St Albans’ Verulamium Park.  This was one of the very last evenings of the summer  which was celebrated in historic style.  Those that were lucky enough to be there probably did not appreciate all the hard work put in behind the scenes to ensure things ran smoothly and in particular the crucial media and communications that glue it all together.

Local broadband provider, Richard Dix of Heacham-based Positive Computing and Rural Broadband, has just returned from Laughs in the Park where he and his team spent the weekend.  Rural Broadband’s role was paramount in providing the broadband for the whole event along with the HMV box office.  Rural Broadband systems fed the public areas, production office and the Twitter screen that ran all night.  Quite a result for a small local business from humble beginnings.

This three-day event took place on the UK’s very first purpose built outdoor comedy platform.  Some 17,000 man hours were involved in the staging of the event.  The setting for “Laughs in the Park” is nothing less than spectacular being home to St Albans Cathedral.  Verulamium Park is named after the Roman City of Verulamium on which it stands (Holywell Hill in St Albans).  The park is a spacious public park surrounding a large lake.  The remains of the old City walls and outline of the London Gate can be seen today.

Five members of Heacham In Bloom attended the Anglia in Bloom Awards in Sudbury on 15 September.  We were very proud to accept the award on behalf of Norfolk Lavender for best commercial nomination.  Norfolk Lavender has been very supportive of Heacham In Bloom since its inception; therefore it is great that their hard work was recognized.   Heacham was awarded Silver for its entry in the Coastal Resort Category, Although this matched the award in 2009, the judges acknowledged, the amount of progress which had been made since last year, by awarding much higher marks.   We have recently carried out our own review of Heacham In Bloom 2010 projects and are looking forward to next year.

We will be holding an open meeting on Wednesday 20 October at the Parish Council Office at 7.00pm, to discuss our plans for Heacham In Bloom 2011 and hopefully welcome some new members. The beauty of In Bloom is that there is a role for just about everybody from, being a member of  the Committee, adopting a planter to maintain, helping at  fundraising events to keeping a hanging basket watered.

I would like to end on reiterating my thanks to my Committee members for their commitment and the many many residents, groups and businesses for their support, without which there would be no Heacham In Bloom.

Heacham Webcam Update

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Posted by Stella Gooch

As is well known, a webcam for Heacham was the brainchild of Stella Gooch of Heacham-On-Line.  Thanks to Aubrey Thomas (formerly of Putting Green Caravan Site), Heacham North Beach Webcam began operation in 2006 in joint co-operation with Putting Green Caravan Site, Richard Dix of Positive Computing, and Stella Gooch of Heacham-On-Line.  The webcam proved to be very popular with visitors to the area and until late 2009 was live on air for 95% of the time.

Naturally, equipment such as webcams need maintaining and thus, towards the end of summer 2009 this became apparent and the webcam went off air for many months.  During that time, ownership of the Putting Green changed and handing over of responsibility for the webcam had to be worked out and repairs made to the hardware.  This meant that the people involved had changed and despite numerous attempts to resolve matters 100% agreement could not be met by all parties which ultimately resulted in the webcam being removed from Putting Green Caravan Site.

The webcam is now safely stored with Positive Computing who will set up the webcam to take in the beautiful sunrises across Marea Farm to the A149 (expected to occur in the next few weeks).  This location need not be forever if a better location can be found.  We invite bids to host the webcam from other suitable Heacham locations.  If you are happy to allow the Heacham webcam to take advantage of your broadband service and be sited at your location (it must have a great Heacham view) then please let me know so that it may be considered by the “Webcam Committee” of Stella Gooch, Malcolm Diggins and Richard Dix.

Operating such equipment does incur costs which are currently being absorbed collectively with some help from donated funds raised by Heacham-On-Line.  Inevitably  the webcam will have problems from time to time and new hardware may be needed at some point.  These problems will be dealt with as we are able to do so, but please remember that the webcam has always been a community asset managed on a voluntary basis.  The funds in hand (£274)  – which are held by Richard Dix at Positive Computing – will eventually run out so if you would like to help to ensure this is maintained please feel  free to make a contribution to keep things afloat by contacting Heacham-On-Line.  Alternatively, Positive Computing and the Heacham Parish Council office will soon have a collection box for donations.

Mad Scientists Workshop

Mad Scientists Workshop

The 2010 Summer Activity Programme began very appropriately with a face mask workshop just prior to Heacham’s Annual Carnival.  This year saw the Summer Activity Programme overlap with the Eagle Sports Academy at Glebe School in Hunstanton to add more variety to the events on offer.

Heacham Wildfowlers  hosted “Young Hot Shots” as  usual and this clay pigeon event proved to be as popular as ever with parents being encouraged to join in as much as the children.  Mad Science Workshop was a new addition to the Summer Activity Programme and a variety of fascinating experiments were carried out by our young scientists!  My children keep asking when the next one is so hopefully this will be retained for next year.

“Beat the Bowler” saw challengers over the age of 8 who had to try and hit the cricket balls “bowled” by the Cricket Club’s new machine.  The ball speeds proved very fast indeed and soon a slower speed was found so that some successful bats could be had.  This proved to be popular among the participants and will no doubt be popular for future Summer Activity Programmes.

Flower Art with the highly talented Heacham Flower Club was a more genteel activity in the Summer’s line up and the youngsters produced some high quality arrangements as a result.

Despite a doubtful start with the weather, the  Archery went ahead with the sun shining on the would-be archers.  It was not long before their tutor had them all hitting their targets and gaining more accuracy and skill as the time wore on.

Olympic Medalists 2010

Olympic Medalists 2010 - James, Tom & Jamie

The Heacham Olympic Challenge was a varied and interesting line up of relay races, javelin throws, balance skills, jumping endurance and sprinting.  Our Olympians were pitted against each other to find out who the overall Olympic Champions were and a point scoring system (with appropriate handicaps) was applied to allow for the differences in age for each contender.  The declared 1st place Olympic Champion was James, 2nd place Tom and 3rd place Jamie.  Each were awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the close of the “games” and all Olympians were awarded a certificate.

Anglia In Bloom (which comprises 6 counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk) was another successful year for the area.  Heacham village gained a Silver Award and Norfolk Lavender (Heacham) was awarded Best Industrial/Commercial area winner.

We would also like to thank the local people who have worked extremely hard in making Heacham and Hunstanton so attractive for visitors with all of their hard work that has gone into the local entries to the Britain in Bloom scheme, we donated some lavender plants to Heacham and Hunstanton but the residents are the real driving force, with great support from the local council and councillors.”

Hunstanton was awarded Gold and was the overall coastal category winner.  In addition, Old Hunstanton achieved a Silver Award;  Boston Square, Hunstanton also gained two nominations both for The Biodiversity Award and for the Best Garden for Special Needs;   The Allotments, Old Hunstanton were nominated for the best Grow Your Own Award.   Nearby  Great Ringstead also did well with a Bronze Award.

The Heacham In Bloom Committee can be proud of their achievements – two awards in two years can’t be bad!  Roll on 2011.
