“Wallis” is a Heacham family name that goes back a long way in Heacham village. Today the name is best known as the shop “A E Wallis”, locally famous for its electrical and white goods which gives the bigger stores a run for their money by competing favourably against them in terms of service, quality and price.  This long established Heacham High Street business came from humble beginnings and their 70 years of being an established Heacham business got missed in 2009 – as they say it is better late than never ….

Arthur Wallis was born in King’s Lynn prior to World War I.   Arthur’s father, Ernest had been invalided out of the Veterinary Corp in the course of the war  and by 1919 the Wallis family were resettled in Heacham.  Here in Heacham Ernest Wallis established a haulage business, describing himself as a “Haulage Contractor and General Carrier” to and from Kings Lynn.

The Wallis shops started life as a single retail shop dealing in radios, electrical items and cycles.  The shop was owned by Reg Stainsby but Arthur Wallis managed the shop from the beginning.  Reg Stainsby then decided to develop his car business which evolved to become another well known and established local business that is still going strong today.

Arthur Wallis’ management role changed to that of Proprietor on 3 May 1939 at a time of true austerity and the reality of war looming. The business operated as a one man band in the early days.  His interest in wireless had begun as a schoolboy when he made up small crystal sets for his parents and grandparents and by popular demand for other Heacham residents. Arthur went out on repair jobs or deliveries, cycling around Heacham or out to neighbouring rural areas with accumulators for those homes not yet reached by electricity, remembering to post a notice to say he would be back shortly.

Arthur Wallis served in the RAF and during this time his shop was operated by other members of his family.  His RAF service involved working on aircraft wirelesses and transmitters, serving in a number of countries including North Africa and Aden.  During his service in Aden he was sent to install a projector in the Sultan’s Palace, after which he was treated to a six course dinner of Eastern fare! The last part of his war service was spent at nearby RAF Bircham Newton which gave him the opportunity, on his off duty periods, to reflect on the long term future for the shop.

After being demobbed, Arthur expanded the business by acquiring the shop next door where he established his range of radio and electrical goods.  The original shop then became a cycle shop.  At that time A E Wallis employed the first of their staff.  In 1947, Roy Gray, straight out of the Army, was employed as a cycle mechanic and remained with the family firm until his retirement. During that time he became a very well known and popular expert on cycling problems.

Arthur set up the first TV in Heacham in his parents’ home. Television began broadcasting from London around 1936 but it was rare for televisions to be in every household as they are today and the quality of transmissions was not great in the area. Commissioning of the Sutton Coldfield and Holme Moss enabled clearer pictures in the local area and this saw an increase in television sales. Events such as King George VI’s funeral and the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953 saw a significant increase in television sales. That same year, Arthur Wallis married.

As the television sales increased the demand for aerials also increased.  At that time TV aerials were eight to ten feet high and known as VHF aerials – considerably larger than the UHF type we see today.

Arthur’s two sons, John and Richard Wallis, took the reins in 1982 and created a partnership for the shops. Richard chose to focus on the electrical side of the business while managed the  cycle shop and the dealt with the administrative tasks to ensure a smoothly operating business.  Although Arthur ceased to play an active role in the business from then on he continued to enjoy visiting the shop to chat to old friends and customers until his death in 1998.

Further expansion of A E Wallis took place between 1988 and with the existing two units being merged into one shop to enlarge the electrical side of the business and a third unit which had previously been an estate agents, was purchased to become a larger cycle showroom.

Over the years the Wallis family have collected a range of vintage televisions, radios and domestic appliances which are on display in the shop. One item Richard found particularly amusing was the leaflet accompanying an ancient Electrolux cylinder vacuum cleaner. It showed you how to use the “blow” end of the cleaner, and a bowl of paint to repaint your car! Of the many old radios in the collection Richard says that his favourite is a 1950′s Murphy, not for its looks, but for the marvellous quality of sound which it produces.

John's autographed photo of the key cast members of "Kingdom"

The photograph of key cast members of Kingdom, signed by Stephen Fry and presented to John Wallis when the bike was first used in the 1st series of Kingdom

One of the highlights of John’s years at A E Wallis was when he was asked to provide a bicycle to take part in the popular TV show “Kingdom”.  Successful TV series “Kingdom was first aired on UK television in 2007 and averaged six million viewers per week. It went on to repeat its success with a second and third series starring Stephen Fry as solicitor, Peter Kingdom, in the fictional Norfolk market town of Shipborough.  A E Wallis was approached to provide one of the “stars” of the series – a Land Rover bicycle!  “Lyle”, played by Karl Davies (Robert Sugden in “Emmerdale” is Peter Kingdom’s young and keen trainee and loves his bicycle which, when not in use, is proudly kept in his office.

John Wallis was first asked in 2006 to supply a bicycle for a new TV series and was given a brief on what was required.  The Producers were so pleased with the Silver Land Rover Athabasca – complete with lock, special briefcase, powerful lights and compass – that no further changes were needed and Lyle’s bicycle was ready for lights, camera, action!

John, his wife Tracey and daughter Vanessa, were invited to see some of the filming and be extras in the “Dyke Jumping Championship” scenes; although you would never spot them on TV they all enjoyed the day.  The cycle was returned to John at the end of filming of the first series, along with a photo of the cast with a personal message from Stephen Fry thanking him for his help.  The bike has now been dusted down and checked over ready for delivery on set and its next taste of fame!

E Wallis shops continue to sell an extensive range of the latest bicycles & cycling accessories.  They also sell modern domestic appliances and home entertainment at competitive prices with the same good old fashioned personal service of days gone by and they also offer home delivery. It is certainly worth paying a visit to see their vintage collection and at quieter times they will be very happy to share snippets of history too.

Bircham Windmill Sails in Position

Bircham Windmill Sails in Position

Photos by Elly Chalmers

Bircham Windmill’s sails have been renewed and are turning after lying dormant for three years.  In that time, the replacement of a rotting weather beam had to be orchestrated. Recently an on-site crane lifted and supported the heavy wind shaft while the old weather beam was removed and the new one placed securely into position.

Owner, Elly Chalmers said that the last time the weather beam had been replaced was in 1979 by her parents, Roger and Gina Wagg, who restored the mill having bought in it 1975 when the building was derelict.  Elly and her husband Steve now run this popular Norfolk tourist attraction which appeals to many young families who will be delighted to once again climb to the top of the windmill and see all the machinery working just as it has done for more than 160 years (although no wheat will be ground).

Bircham Windmill continues to bake fresh bread and cakes daily during the summer season which is now underway.  Bircham Windmill now also produces and sells its own feta and Wensleydale type cheeses from the milk produced by their flock of sheep which can be seen being milked at 2pm every day. The work was carried out by Lincolnshire millwrights, R.Thompson and Son.

This May Bank Holiday, Sunday 2nd and Monday 3rd of May, Bircham Windmill are holding their annual Craft Fair.    The fair and the Windmill attraction will be open from 10 am to 5 pm each day and it is FREE ENTRY to all the ground floor areas of this lovely, unspoilt attraction and of course FREE ENTRY to the Craft Fair itself.

On Sunday there is the Castaways singing  from 1pm and on Monday the annual, unusual Maypole dancing!  Sally North and choreographer, Rose Lowe have developed some more complicated dances.   The maypole will be whirling from about 1pm onwards and we are hoping for as many volunteers as possible for the dancing and the band.

The Windmill museum, tearoom, bakery, gift shop and cycle hire are all open as usual and well worth a visit.   Local photographs and paintings by Roger Jennings will be on display, and outside, for the children are guinea pigs, rabbits, sheep and ponies.   The bakery will be running flat out over the bank holiday weekend to provide bread, rolls, cakes and scones for visitors to buy, or sample in the tearooms.

Michele Rudd and Carole Hall accept floral tributes for their fundraising efforts

Two local ladies, Michele Rudd and Carole Hall, are bucking the recession to launch an exciting new business.  Shazarele offer – for sale or hire – a range of exquisite ball gowns and prom dresses.  A charity fashion show, in aid of Campaign Care 94, launched the new business on 11 March 2010 at the Le Strange Hotel in Hunstanton.  Campaign Care 94 was formed to raise funds to fight against cancer and Tapping House Hospital (now Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House) became associated with Campaign Care.  Michele and Carole were very keen to support such a worthy cause and launch their new business at the same time.

As a result, a glittering evening of glamour was created and it was a resounding success.  (More tickets had to be printed to try and accommodate the over-subscription!)   The Barn Hair & Beauty Salon from Dersingham styled the hair and make up for the models and Jazzy Gems provided the jewellery accessories and   Nick from Scent With Love in Hunstanton provided floral displays and a silk flower for each show goer.  Each of these local businesses had stalls for show patrons to visit during the interval alongside The Hat Shop from Burnham Market  and the sumptuous Cherry Hill Chocolates from Hunstanton.

Michele and Carole were also assisted in pulling off this wonderful  event by 17 local ladies who consented to be models for an evening.  Our  would be “Claudia Schiffers” were: Kerry, Jamie, Susan, Holly, Tiffany, Sian, Paulette, Beth, Wendy, Sharon, Kelly, Antonia, Jackie, Sinead, Tanya, Michele and Julie.  The male models included Alan, Jim (Race), Leon, Morty, Chris and Simon.  The evening was relaxed and fun filled with some of the male models (particularly Jim Race) providing  the laughs by seizing numerous opportunities to show off whilst walking the catwalk to the tunes of hotel pianist, Jim Rock.   All the models looked the business – the guys were dapper and the dolls were stunning to say the least.

Kerry & the gents have a laugh as they make their final exit from the catwalk

There was a high quality range of raffle prizes from numerous local businesses and friends.  Among them were lovely meals for two courtesy of the West Norfolk Pub and Heacham Manor Hotel (both in Heacham), the Le Strange Hotel in Hunstanton and the Coach & Horses in Dersingham.

Carole closed the evening by thanking everybody involved.  Bob and Ann Willey and Carl and other staff at the Le Strange Hotel made sure everything was right on the night at the venue and Carl had even given up his holiday to put in many hours in the week prior to the event.  Gloria Hurn from Pentney House provided fascinators and lovely goody bags for show goers, Nicola and Alice from Active Hands of Heacham did the nails, Theresa Rudd steamed and pressed all the dresses and  Julie Flegg did the necessary alterations.  Carole also thanked Gary Tillet from Goddards of Kings Lynn who assisted the male models with their dress and Goddards also provided the male outfits for the evening.  And last, but by no means least, Rob Topliss did them proud with their advertising and photographs on the night and Charlie videoed proceedings.

Let’s not forget that the event was designed to raise funds for Campaign Care 94 and Carole and Michele were delighted to learn that they had raised in excess of £900 which is a fantastic result for everyone who participated.

The evening certainly had a lot of hard work put into it and boy did it show.  Well done girls.  No doubt Shazarele will go from strength to strength with all this drive behind it.

Great gift for Mum launched in Heacham Gifts

My Very Special Mum cushion

As most Heacham people now know, Doreen Reed has entertained many audiences across East Anglia with her homespun amusing poems and tales of nostalgia and everyday life. Later this year she is taking her humour to The Isles of Scilly, a performance she is very much looking forward to.

However, Doreen also writes some serious and meaningful poetry.  One such poem “My Very Special Mum” was included in Poet’s Corner on the old Heacham-On-Line site during March 2007.  This poem was read by Joy of Heacham Gifts whom liked it very much.  With Doreen’s permission Joy has put Doreen’s poem on a cushion cover which can be purchased from Joy’s shop in the High Street, Heacham.

As you can see from the photo, the cushion would make a lovely gift for anyone’s Mum on any occasion, not just Mothering Sunday.

Welcome to Heacham and Hunstanton News!

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Welcome to the very first post on Heacham-On-Line’s news blog.

Stories and features (and many old photos) that have appeared on the site in the past will return in a different form at some point.  Going forward such features should appear in this section.  Hopefully I will not be the only contributor to it.

Your new look Heacham-On-Line website has been in the planning for a very long time and brings a fresh new look which is more useful to visitors.   The front page advertisements have been replaced by randomly generated adverts throughout the site rather than just on the front page.  This means that everyone gets a chance to appear rather than a small number.  However, those that have paid to be on the original front page will get 4 x the opportunity to appear in the rotating adverts.  Business sections have been significantly cleaned up and more listings of local businesses are available to make the site an even more useful source of information.  The format for this site will also soon apply to Hunstanton-On-Line.

If you observe any broken links or problems please do let us know as the redevelopment project has been a mammoth task and we may have missed something.
