Calendar Girls comes to Heacham!
Thursday, November 15th, 2012Posted by Pochantas Players
One Monday evening during October, an idea was jokingly suggested that we (the older female members of The Pocahontas Players) should make a Calendar Girls type calendar. The following Monday we had a meeting to discuss poses, accessories, and mainly for what charity we would raise funds for? The following week, our lighting studio ( thanks to Dave Curtis for giving up your office) was all set up and our 12 photographs were taken. Although we were all women together, it wasn’t the easiest thing to do but as the evening wore on, we got braver and as you can imagine, had lots and lots of giggles and laughter.
We needed 12 sponsors, to sponsor £50 for each month. We had all 12, within 3 days! Amazing! The following Monday, all photos were ‘set’ with each sponsor, waiting to go to print. All done in the space of 3 enthusiastic weeks!
Our target to raise, is £1,000. The money raised will be for Heacham Group Surgery to purchase a 24 hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor. These monitors actually cost £1,355.00 . You never know, we could, with YOUR HELP, raise the total amount?
Calendars will be on Sale at:
Heacham’s – Post Office, Suttons Estate Agents, Chop n’ Change & Jennings or Hunstanton’s Scent with Love & Cherry Tree Chocolates OR you can call 01485 570402 – Price £6.50
Our models age ranges from 35 to 92, Each of us have a role within the Heacham Pocahontas Players Drama Group to which we used the appropriate prop !!!

Monday, October 15th, 2012Posted by Zena Penty, Norfolk MIND
West Norfolk Mind held an ‘open day’ at its Poplar Avenue, Heacham, day centre in October where staff, volunteers and service users spoke to both members of the local community and to visitors from other local health and community services about the centre and it’s services. More than 40 people streamed through the doors of this popular, friendly and recently-refurbished support centre to find out more about what’s on offer now the launch of a range of new services are open to the entire local community over the age of 18 for the whole of West Norfolk.

The Grove offers bed and breakfast once again
Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012Posted by Stella Gooch
For many years, The Grove at Collins Lane, Heacham operated as a highly successful quality bed and breakfast under the previous ownership. The B&B offering was temporarily withdrawn in 2010 but continued to provide self-catering holidays in The Old Barn until the previous owners sold the business in May 2012.
Clare and David Hunt from Leicestershire bought The Grove and have worked hard to make it a bed and breakfast once again with room rates starting at £70 per room per night. As many locals and visitors know, The Grove is an elegant Victorian building that offers off street parking for up to 5 cars so it is ideal situated for operating as a high quality B&B.
Recently, Clare and David were delighted to report: “The Old Barn has been booked for most of the summer, however we are gradually building the B&B business back up.”
The Old Barn was converted into lovely self catering holiday accommodation with character for up to 4 people. It is available to book throughout the year – and has full central heating – with high season bookings running from Friday 3pm to Friday 10am. All linen is provided and there is a washing machine and tumble dryer available for the use of guests. The Old Barn is located behind The Grove B&B and shares the off street parking.
The first floor in the main house has two ensuite guest rooms as well as one twin room with a private bathroom. As you would expect, all rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished with luxury Egyptian cotton bedding. Refreshments are provided in all rooms including bottled water on arrival. A 32” LED TV with inbuilt freeview, free WiFi, and a hairdryer.
The breakfast offered at The Grove includes cereals, fresh fruit and juices, yoghurts, porridge, full English including dry cured bacon, David Cook’s pork sausages, free range eggs, fresh tomatoes, mushrooms and baked beans. All accompanied by freshly home baked bread, honey, jam, marmalade and marmite.
David recently retired from the Fire Service and Clare was previously a Manager in the HR Department at Selfridges. Having escaped from the daily stress of commuting to work, Clare is very happy to be living and working in a lovely Norfolk retreat such as Heacham and is looking forward to meeting many new friends amongst their guests over the coming years.

Chairman of Heacham In Bloom

As every Gardener knows the biggest challenge is the weather and this year has been no exception. I am pleased to report though, that I think we did pretty well all things considered and the Anglia in Bloom Judges seemed to think so too. We now have to wait until 11 September to hear our results, but for now we will sit back and hope for sunshine to bring on some of plants that have yet to flower. Once again, I pay tribute to the team who have worked extremely hard. A big thank you also to those of you out there who gave support in kind and sponsorship, we are very grateful. I am pleased to say that our Best Blooming Caravan Competition has really taken off, so very well done to Long Acres who won again this year, but also congratulations to Seashore Holiday Park and North Beach Holiday Park who came second and third respectively. Congratulations as well to the winners of the individual caravans for putting on a fantastic display as the photos will show.
We attended a lovely Assembly at Heacham Infants and First School to see the results of our sunflower competition. It was not the best year for sunflower but the winner, Lillie recorded a height of 195 cms, hopefully the sunflowers will continue to grow over the summer. Thank you to all of you who attended our Garden Party on 21 July in aid of Heacham In Bloom 2013. Our next meeting is 20 August at 7.00pm – Parish Council Office.

Heacham Carnival rain and shine!

Click to see more photos of Heacham Carnival 2012.
The forecast shown on the BBC website for Sunday 5 August the night before predicted sunshine in the morning but rain from around midday throughout the afternoon. I thought, wow Heacham Carnival always has the sun shining on it. I checked again early on Carnival Day to find the forecast had improved to say rain would be later on in the afternoon. Great I thought, we will get the parade through and the majority of Carnival Day will happen in the sun. Well ….. almost!
The car boot and fete was set up early as usual and visitors came out in great numbers as you would hope. I arrived in Heacham in good time to follow the parade and get some photos. This year’s parade was smaller than in the past but the entries were of a high quality. Well done to all those that put in the hard work to make such a display of colour possible.
In glorious sunshine, the floats set off from College Drive at the unusually later time of 2.30pm as advertised. The Peterborough Highland Pipe Band marched with the rest of the parade through Heacham displaying the full splendor of their impressive uniforms and filled the air with the emotive bagpipes and drums.
By the time the floats arrived at the bottom of Heacham High Street (where I waited patiently with my camera) and prepared to turn left towards the Heacham playing fields dark clouds had built up right overhead and a steady stream of cars headed towards the parade beating a hasty retreat in an attempt to beat the weather. The retreating cars forced the parade to pause and once the way was clear I had my opportunity to get my photos for Heacham-On-Line.
Just as I began to click, both my camera and I were literally bathed in cascading rain. It was hilarious – most people caught up in the maelstrom couldn’t help laughing through it as the parade continued towards Heacham playing fields to the sound of the Peterborough Highland Pipe Band. All credit to the band members who continued to march stoically throughout the downpour despite being all wet through to the skin in just 5 minutes like the rest of us.
It was as if a tap had been turned on one moment and then turned off the next because in the short distance from the High Street to the Heacham playing fields the sun was trying to break through once again and the rain had disappeared. I will forever picture Heacham Carnival 2012 with Carnival winners, The Simpson Family by Heacham Judo Club, marching to the fields with the make-up streaming down their faces. I felt quite sorry for the Carnival Lavender Queen, Millie Jose, and her Princesses (Jessica Parish, Hannah Stafford and Poppy Jose) who were literally shivering with cold after the rain whilst they were doing their best to perform their duties at the awards ceremony.
The Best Family Float was by the Guymer Family who did an excellent “Jolly Roger” and Heacham in Bloom won the “Best Group” category with the “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party”. Remarkably, Heacham Judo Club’s Simpsons winning the “Best Overall” category chalks up a hat trick for them – 3 Carnivals in a row.
Also at the Carnival was Heacham’s Torch Bearer, James Pollard who had also attended complete with the Olympic Torch.
A little about the Peterborough Highland Pipe Band
The Peterborough Highland Pipe Band have been entertaining the public since 1947 and was formed by Pipe Major James Hanlon with a group of former Scots Guards. They have won many competitions and became English Champions, receiving the coveted silver Drum Major’s Mace.
The band are self-funding and regularly attend events like Heacham Carnival. The band help raise funds for their various charities, attend many Remembrance Parades and have worked closely with The Royal British Legion. Private bookings (ie weddings, funerals etc) are a speciality for the band and you can find out more on their website.
