Heacham Library launches Internet Taster Sessions

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

The buzz at Heacham Library this month is actually all about computers rather than books as we launch a series of Internet Taster sessions. We are very lucky to have formed a group of Internet Champions who have volunteered to help the many of you to whom the internet is a whole other world.  We aim to demystify the internet and offer a support network to help you tutor yourself.  We already have a waiting list which we are working through.     If you have not already done so you can register your interest at the Library.

The Open Day went well and we welcomed back numerous members to the Library who we had not seen for some time as well as some new members both young and old.

The feature author for November is Philippa Gregory, well known for her historical novels featuring women who play pivotal roles at the Royal Court such as “The Other Boleyn Girl” which made it to the silver screen.

Vicar of Heacham does the Norfolk Churches Trust bike ride

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

Twelve months ago I marked Saturday 10th September 2011 in my diary in an attempt to keep the day clear.  In 2009, on the corresponding Saturday, for the first time in this area I had participated in the Norfolk Churches Trust Sponsored Bike Ride.  Last year, on the second Saturday in September, I was officiating at a wedding, hence the plan to keep the day in 2011 free from other business.  The weather in 2009 was misleading: some cloud, temperatures around 19°C and no wind.  It was different this year when the wind blew in typical Norfolk fashion; it made the day significantly harder.

This annual event raises money to support the many churches in our area.  Half of the money raised goes to the Norfolk Historic Churches Trust; half directly to the home church of the cyclist or walker – you are allowed to travel on foot.

I had wondered whether I could visit all the churches in the Deanery, i.e. the local grouping of Anglican Churches (except the ruins).  It sounded a good idea at the time when the air was still and the day far away.  I did try to be reasonably sensible and planned a route that gave me a get out clause.  When I got to Docking I could turn left and home to Heacham or turn right and continue to Stanhoe, Burnham Deepdale and all points along the coast.
On my way I came across churches where there was someone to welcome and refresh; others where refreshment was available for the traveller, others where the door was open but no sign of anything else and some where the doors were locked and no one was in sight.  It struck me as a parable for our church times.

The journey was uneventful. The motorised road traffic was considerate; throughout the day no one cut me up – not always the case when riding a bike.
I started by getting to Ringstead shortly after 9am.  It would have been 9am except I had to return to the house to pick up what I had forgotten.  On to Sedgeford, Fring and multiple other points all the way to Docking and decision time.  I turned right.  By that point I felt better than I had done an hour earlier.

Approximately 61 miles after leaving Heacham I returned to my home church and the final signing in point just on 5pm in great need of a shower and rest.  I had visited the 26 Anglican churches (and one other). I felt quite pleased when I got home, showered and sat down and did not feel too bad.  Then I tried to get up.

The Deanery has many churches all of which require upkeep.  We can talk about our church buildings as millstones round our necks.  The weight of them drags us down.  Perhaps we should remember that active millstones, driven by the wind (or other means) ground the grain that produced the flour that was baked into bread that fed the people.

Churches today, driven by the wind of the Spirit, can still feed the people.  The picture from Ingoldisthorpe reminds us that the people are the church.  It is through the people that God takes his word to the world to feed the hungry.

When I talked to my son about what I had done this was his response: “You should not be looking to cover more miles than your age and the greater the age the fewer miles you should be doing!” So spoke one who had just completed the Three Peaks Challenge and who has been far fitter than his Dad for many years.

It is true that age takes its toll.  Perhaps a few years ago I would have been less troubled by the wind that always seemed to be in my face regardless of my direction of travel.  As I pushed up yet another incline it was obvious that age was not just in the mind.  At times our journey is hard; sometimes we will feel lonely and find locked doors.  At other times our companions will endow the journey with great joy.  I pray we will welcome fellow travellers and encourage each other to feed.

Heacham Parish Council Clerk, Philippa Sewell, advised Heacham-On-Line that there is now a new look Parish Council website.  Heacham residents will, I am sure, be pleased to see a more appealing web presence for the Heacham Parish Council.  Mrs Sewell said: “I hope that the new website will help reflect the work of the council and will provide a useful source of information to residents and interested parties.  The site is intended to be the equivalent of the village noticeboard on-line.”  The new website can be found at: www.heachamparishcouncil.co.uk.

The 2011 annual Anglia in Bloom awards were a real celebration for Heacham with the village receiving no less than three nominations:

  • Best Community Award for Sunnyside Care Home, Heacham
  • Best Industrial and Commercial Area Award for Heacham Manor
  • Best Environmental Quality Award for high levels of cleanliness and tidiness of the village

In addition, Heacham was awarded a Silver Gilt which was an improvement on last year’s Silver Award.  Heacham found itself competing in the good company of Lowestoft, Yarmouth, Sheringham and Hunstanton who also received Silver Gilt awards.

This brings the village’s unbroken award winning records to three consecutive years.  We have all come to expect high standards of achievement from the Heacham In Bloom Committee and they continue to make Heacham proud.  Well done to you all.

In addition to Hunstanton gaining a Silver Gilt, the town was also named coastal category winner and the King’s Lynn team gained a Silver Gilt overall and also won the Best Public Open Space Special Award.

Commenting on Heacham’s wonderful result, a very delighted Heacham In Bloom Chairman, Susan Richardson said: “I am very proud that Heacham achieved a Silver Gilt at the Anglia In Bloom awards ceremony held in Colchester last month.    Heacham In Bloom has improved year on year and Silver Gilt is a great reward for us and everyone who has played a part in our success.  I am particularly  pleased that the Judges shortlisted Sunnyside for the community award as they took part in the Heacham In Bloom Pride of Place Campaign. The gardens and golf course at Heacham Manor Hotel were  also shortlisted in the best commercial category. Heacham was one of 4 areas nominated for an Environmental award from all the entries and categories.   We now move forward into the 2012 competition brimming with ideas. If you would like to help us, the next meeting is Monday 17 October at 7.00pm at the Parish Council Office, all welcome.”

I have just been advised by Heacham Parish Council that Heacham Allotments are to celebrate their centenary this year.

There is to be a cheese and wine party on Friday 14 October 7-9pm at the Old Friends Hall, Sunnyside to help mark the event.

Heacham Allotments were set up in the Autumn of 1911 and have provided many hundreds of locals with fruit and veg as well as friendship.  If you have any stories or anecdotes to share with memories of the allotments then please email me at: stella@heacham-on-line.co.uk (with a pic or two if you have them).

Heacham Summer Activities 2011

Fabulous Venetian Masks created by local children

Fabulous Venetian Masks created by local children

The 2011 Heacham Summer Activities programme kicked off with an opportunity for the children to learn about family coat of arms.  The Old Friends Hall in Sunnyside was full of coloured cardboard, ribbon and pictures of dragons, lions, unicorns and more.  The children spent a fun morning doing art and craft activities to create their own coat of arms.  Some of the final results were very eye catching indeed.

Next up was the pottery morning where even some very young children (with the help of Mum) got into painting a pottery item of their choice.  My son chose to paint a train money box and he was very pleased at the results.  Others chose to paint a pottery footballer, a football, tortoise and even a perfume bottle.  This activity was run by “Drive U Pottery” who basically come to you with pottery items you can paint.  You just buy the pottery item, paint it and they fire it in the kiln so you get the final product with a professional glazed finish.  The personaable lady who runs “Drive U Pottery” even found time to engage the children in a fun game whilst they were waiting for their friends and siblings to complete their “works of art”.

The Venetian Carnival Mask morning produced fabulous results using paints, tissue paper and jewels just before the Heacham Carnival.  I don’t recall seeing any of the masks at the Carnival though so I guess they must be adorning the bedroom walls of their creators.

Fortunately, the weather obligingly stayed dry for both the Olympic Challenge and the clay pigeoning.  The popular 2 day Olympic Challenge allowed a group of children to participate in a variety of athletic disciplines and face the Olympic style challenge in a modern day mini-pentathlon with medals for the winners.

There were also two sessions of clay pigeon shooting with Heacham Wildfowlers voluntarily providing their expert instruction many youngsters the art of shooting safely.  The mini rifle range was also available for standard target practice and this was particularly popular with my youngest son who found the recoil of the larger guns a bit too much.

Archery and quick cricket were included in this year’s programme once again.  In addition, new activities were Laser Gaming and the latest craze of Speed Stacking.
