Piazza planned for one of Hunstanton’s key gateways to the sea

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Plans to create a piazza-style gateway to the sea located between the Oasis Sports and Leisure Centre and the former Kit Kat site in Hunstanton are due to be unveiled next month to enable local people and visitors to comment on the proposals before the design is finalised.

Cllr Jason Law, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, explained: “We’ve been working closely with ward members and local town councillors to come up with a scheme that will significantly improve this important through-route from the car park to the seafront.  Local organisations and businesses have also been involved in workshops to help select street furniture designs and to determine the types of materials they would like to see used.  We now want to get the views of local residents and visitors on the proposals we are putting forward.”

The plans include transforming the road which leads from the Seagate car park, past the back of the Oasis Sports and Leisure Centre, to the seafront, into a paved piazza-style area incorporating seating and lighting.  Paving will be designed to create an even surface and a safe and pleasant environment for pedestrians whilst maintaining access for service vehicles.

The Oasis service area will be screened off with a sensitive planting scheme.  Tamarisks, with their attractive pink flowers, have been chosen because of their ability to thrive in seaside environments.  The lifeguard building and beach office will be relocated to give an uninterrupted view to the sea.  The appearance of the public conveniences will be improved by re-facing the exterior with materials that reflect the design of the new scheme.

Cllr Elizabeth Watson, Hunstanton Ward Councillor, added:  “Hunstanton is treasured by visitors and residents alike.  We’ve been working really hard through our In Bloom efforts to make sure that the town looks its best and creates a great first impression.  However, we recognise that there are still some areas that aren’t up to the same high standard.  Seagate has been identified as a priority area and the proposals we have put together will really transform this key gateway to the seafront.”

The proposals are currently being drawn up in detail ready for public consultation.  They will put on display around the resort in time for the late May Bank Holiday weekend.

In the meantime, plans to replace all the promenade seating have now been finalised.  Seafront businesses, Hunstanton Town Council representatives and members from the Civic Society have helped to choose the design for the new seating which is due to be installed in time for the late May Bank Holiday.  The bespoke design will be modelled on the sea-serpent of the traditional Victorian-style seating and produced in modern materials suitable for a coastal Seagate was identified as a key area for development in the Hunstanton Town Centre and Southern Seafront Masterplan, published in July 2008.

Plans will go on display in Hunstanton once they are released for publication.

Maypole Dancing at Bircham Windmill

Maypole Dancing at Bircham Windmill

This May Bank Holiday, Sunday 2nd and Monday 3rd of May, Bircham Windmill are holding their annual Craft Fair.    The fair and the Windmill attraction will be open from 10 am to 5 pm each day and it is FREE ENTRY to all the ground floor areas of this lovely, unspoilt attraction and of course FREE ENTRY to the Craft Fair itself.

On Sunday we will have the Castaways singing  from 1pm and on Monday our usual, unusual Maypole dancing! Sally North and choreographer, Rose Lowe have developed some more complicated dances.  I’m particularly looking forward to ‘the spiders web’.  The maypole will be whirling from about 1pm onwards and we are hoping for as many volunteers as possible for the dancing and the band.

The Windmill museum, tearoom, bakery, gift shop and cycle hire are all open as usual and well worth a visit.   We also have a opened with an exhibition by Roger Jennings of local photographs and paintings, and outside, for the children are guinea pigs, rabbits, sheep and ponies.   Our bakery will be running flat out over the bank holiday weekend to provide bread, rolls, cakes and scones for visitors to buy, or sample in the tearooms.

Our windmill sails will be turning, wind permitting and don’t forget the sheep milking at 2pm – cheese on sale in the bakery.  Hope to see you all there this Bank Holiday Weekend!

Heacham Digital Camera Club Photographer of 2009

Ray Hanford presents Fred Galley with Photographer of the Year 2009 Plaque

The Heacham Digital Camera Club Photographer of the Year was awarded to the club’s Fred Galley and his award was presented by Ray Hanford at a recent club meeting.  It has been a hectic 2009 for Heacham Digital Camera Club with more competition entries than ever by club members – some competitions were outside the club such as the West Norfolk in Bloom photography competition.  Heacham Digital Camera Club’s  Derek Dean (from Hunstanton) was delighted to achieve runner up in this competition.

For the first time, the club ran a Male V Female competition.  The subject was ‘Movement’ and entries were judged by Roy Williamson a long-serving Lynn News Photographer.  Roy endeared himself to the lady members of the club as they were chosen as the winning team and it was all on merit as the judging was blind – ie Roy did not know who had taken the photographs.  That was a coup for the ladies as a man has won Photographer of the Year since it started and now the ladies have it on good authority that they are doing a great job waving the flag for the female members.

2009 also involved numerous local photograph exhibitions.  These were  a great success and some club members sold framed photographs.

A number of HDCC members had their photos published including Heather Brown from Snettisham who had a photograph chosen for The Wash Calender 2010 and both Heather and her husband, Trevor, were asked to provide many of their photographs for Corgi News.   Alan Walker is having some of his photographs used in a book about the North Norfolk Coast and along with wife Viv have many photographs on the Lancashire Heeler website which were also used on the large screens at Crufts in March this year and many of their framed local photographs furnish the walls of Millbridge Nursing Home in Heacham.  Club members’ photographs are also being used for websites which the club is happy to provide.

The club has also been selling local scene cards, bookmarks, postcards and magnets.  Should anyone wish to enquire about these, join the club, or need more information on their fun nights at The Sandringham Club, West Newton just email them: heachamdigitalcameraclub@yahoo.co.uk or call Viv on 07906 056019.

Bike Ride to Raise Funds for Park House, Sandringham

Phil Davies and a Park House Resident with Current Mini Bus Behind

Phil Davies, a member of the Discover West Norfolk group, is seeking sponsorship for cycling over 1,000 miles from Lands End to John O’Groats this summer  in aid of Park House, the Leonard Cheshire Disability hotel located at Sandringham, near Kings Lynn.

Phil, part of the Pensthorpe bird reserve team in Norfolk, also works as a volunteer minibus driver for Park House, and is spearheading an appeal to raise £38,000 for a much-needed new minibus.  The bike ride will cover over 1,000 miles in 12 days at an average of 85 miles a day and will raise funds for Leonard Cheshire Disability, in memory of Phil’s dad, who was paralysed and wheelchair bound in a car accident. He used to visit Park House, the only Leonard Cheshire hotel for the disabled in the country, and Phil now works there once or twice a week as a volunteer, taking guests and their carers out in their (very old) minibus.

If you would like to follow Phil’s training and fundraising progress, you can visit his blog on http://www.lcdisability.org/eventsblog, or to sponsor him go to www.justgiving.com/PhilBobGerry-LEJOG.

So please give generously - these are tough rides and it’s a very worthwhile cause!

Grand Slam presentation for Hunstanton District school children

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Photos by Rob Topliss

Children from schools in the Hunstanton district took part in an inaugural presentation event at Hunstanton Town Hall on 30 March 2010.  The event was to mark their achievements in completing a ten week Playing for Success (PfS) programme in the Grand Slam Learning Centre based at Premier Raquets & Fitness in the nearby village of Sedgeford.  The children were from Heacham Junior, Blenheim Park, Flitcham, Sedgeford and Sandringham & West Newton Primary schools.

Heacham Junior School

Hunstanton Mayor presents award to Nikki Daly of Heacham Junior School

Prizes were awarded by Hunstanton Mayor, Christine Earnshaw, with special awards being made to Sandringham & West Newton Primary for the Best Team Spirit and Heacham Junior School the Best Attendance award.

The presentation event at Hunstanton Town Hall involved all five schools who have attended Grand Slam this term receiving their prizes at the same time.  During the course, using the stimulus of sports such as tennis, the children developed their literacy, numeracy, ICT, tennis and fundamental movement skills during nine three hour sessions after school.   Concluding their programme of hard work was this rewards ceremony with prizes for the children making the best improvement in tennis, best sports person, school with the best attendance and school demonstrating the best team spirit throughout the programme.

The Grand Slam is part funded by the Council and the Department for Children, Schools and Families and is one of Norfolk County Council (NCC) Children’s Services Study Centres.

Sandringham & West Newton Primary

The scheme has an additional four other centres in Norwich City Football Club, North Walsham Rugby Club, King’s Lynn Stars Speedway and Cliff Park High School in Gorleston, Norfolk each offering an extensive range of educational services available to schools.

Since opening in September 2007, over four hundred children from nineteen different schools have attended this after school PfS programme. Daytime courses are also conducted for schools and adult groups.  A group of nine adults have  just completed a free ten week ‘writing skills for beginners’ course delivered by NCC Adult Education.

With funding secured for another year, Grand Slam Centre Manager, Adam Edwards is looking to make this learning resource an invaluable part of the community that everybody can access and build on their growing successes.

Hunstanton Town SignHunstanton-On-Line is in advanced stages of re-development and the old site will soon be removed.  As in the case of Heacham-On-Line news features will appear in this section going forward.  Please note that the favourite old photo gallery will begin to return once I have got the site structure established for both Hunstanton-On-Line and Heacham-On-Line.

Local clubs and non-profit organisations in the Hunstanton area should feel free to participate in the site and those with websites need only send a small pic and a URL for their site to be added to the Clubs Section.

Please let us know if you find any broken links or problems as this helps move things along and allows us to promote Hunstanton in the best possible light.
