On Sunday there will be children’s show jumping (no ponies – just children!), guinea pig racing, our famous sheep racing, horse dressage and meet the horse and Mrs Ward will be there with lots of children’s activities.

On Monday there is Doggy show jumping, Morris dancing, sheep shearing, our great fun dog show and the show jumping with the finale of our collie dog V the horse in a higher and higher competition.  Mrs Ward will be there again in her Victorian cottage with her sister reminiscing about old times.

On both days there will be pony rides, alpaca walking, story telling, face painting and guessing games for the children with some lovely prizes, stalls and craft demonstrations and a tractor for the children to climb on. The sheep milking will be on at 1.30pm on both days and the debut Wenesleydale style cheese ‘Norfolk Charm’ will be on sale.  ‘It has taken us three months to mature the Norfolk Charm to, what we hope will be, perfection’ Said Elly Chalmers who is milking 11 sheep this year at Bircham Windmill and turning all that she produces into cheese.  ‘people seem to love it’ says Elly.

The bakery and tearooms will be open as usual, with extra refreshments served in the marquee.

Hunstanton has been named as one of 71 English beaches to receive the internationally recognised Blue Flag Award.  The award is a symbol to beach goers that they can be assured of good quality water and high standards of safety, services and general environmental management.

It is the first time since 2006 that the 900m stretch of coastline, reaching from the iconic striped cliffs of Hunstanton to the fringe of Searles’ Resort, has secured the accolade. Previously the beach gained the Quality Coastline mark, recognising the high standard of the beach and facilities.

Over the past 12 months the borough council and Environment Agency have been working with local traders to ensure that materials are disposed of correctly. The council has also implemented a programme of regular drain and road clearance.

Martin Chisholm, Business Manager, explained: “Maintaining excellent water quality is a challenge and relies on a great many factors, some of which, like the weather, are out of our control. However, with the help of local residents, traders and responsible visitors to the beach, we were determined to do what we could to improve and are delighted that everyone’s efforts have led to a noticeable improvement in water quality this year.”

Cllr. Elizabeth Nockolds, Cabinet Member for Sports, Arts and Open Spaces, said: “This is great news for Hunstanton and further recognition of the excellent quality of the resort. It’s particularly pleasing as Hunstanton is beginning to gain a great reputation amongst water sports enthusiasts, with the British Kitesurfing Association and British Windsurfing Association both holding national competitions here in July as part of Lifestyles Festival. The award gives competitors, and other water users, confidence in the quality of the water and means that Hunstanton now has the whole package – great facilities, well-managed, safe, clean beaches and good standards of water quality.”

Hunstanton Town Mayor, Christine Earnshaw welcomed the news, “Visitors will be impressed to see the flag flying. I thank everyone from the borough who has contributed to achieving this high standard along our beach.”

Having secured recognition of the excellent quality of the beach, Hunstanton is now striving to do the same for its public open spaces as it gears up for the final stages of the Britain in Bloom 2010 competition. Last year the town scooped a Silver Gilt in the prestigious national competition.

The 6th Lifestyles Extreme Sports Festival launched in early April when it was announced that the event would feature not one but two national ranking competitions, and would play host to KLFM’s 18th birthday party celebrations.  This year’s event takes place on 9, 10 and 11 July in Hunstanton.

The Lifestyles Festival, which first took place in 2005, has now become firmly established as the eastern region’s premier extreme sports festival and has helped cement Hunstanton’s reputation as an extreme sports destination.

This reputation is confirmed by the return of the British Kite Surfing Association for a record fourth year running.    Richard Gowers, BKSA Chairman, explained: “Hunstanton is just a perfect venue for us.  The event brings a real buzz to the town, and our competitors really enjoy all the activity that is going on alongside the competition.  The event attracts some superb talent, which means we are able to put on a good show for spectators.”

A first for this year is the announcement that the event will also be hosting the UK Windsurfing Association national championship competition.   The UK Windsurfing Association attended the event last year to put on some windsurfing demonstrations.

Youngsters get in on the act at Lifestyles Festival 2008

The Lifestyles Festival will feature all the usual high-adrenalin activities, including BMX, skateboarding and inline skating demonstrations.  Free have-a-go workshops for schools which include power-kiting, windsurfing, climbing, street dance, skateboarding, inline skating and BMX will take place on the Friday, with further have-a-go opportunities available for the public on the Saturday and Sunday.

Tony Devenish, Sports Development Officer at the Borough Council and organiser of the event explained: “The popularity of this event just goes from strength to strength.  We’re really excited about seeing some of the country’s top talent showing off their skills in windsurfing and kite surfing.  It’s going to be awesome.”

And it doesn’t stop there.  This year’s Lifestyles Festival will be playing host to KLFM’s 18th Birthday celebrations.  They’ll be showcasing the best of local live music and playing host to some of the bands from The Sunday Session.  MD Pam Lawton is looking forward to the event: “It’s great that we get to join up with such a fantastic local event as we celebrate turning 18.  Hunstanton is just the perfect place to hold our birthday party.  We’re taking over the Lifestyles stage during the afternoon and hope that people from across West Norfolk will join us to make it KL.FM’s best birthday yet.  We’ll also be broadcasting live from the beach during the afternoon on 96.7fm.”

Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds, Cabinet Member for Sports, Arts and Open Spaces, added: “This event has so much to offer.  There are opportunities to watch the experts, soak up the festival atmosphere or try a new activity.  The have-a-go sessions have proved very popular and have helped people not interested in traditional sports find alternative ways of keeping active.”

“All I can say is get the dates in your diary, book your accommodation if you’re planning to stay, and watch this space as we announce further details of the event over the coming weeks, including the live music line-up for the Friday and Saturday evenings,” concluded Tony.
