Holkham Hall Estate

Holkham Hall EstateThe Holkham Estate will be showcasing farming past and present on Sunday June 17 when it takes part in Open Farm Sunday and also hosts a Victorian Farm Day.Open Farm Sunday is a national event organised by LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) giving people the opportunity to visit their local farms and meet the farmers who grow their local produce and care for the countryside.

At Holkham, visitors can view the display of large, modern farm machinery used in the farm operation on the estate and meet members of Holkham’s farming team to find out what is involved in modern farming today. This will be a great opportunity to get inside the cabs and see the on-board equipment and technology behind today’s machines. There will be guided tours of the farming areas of the park in an open trailer every hour between 11am and 3pm.  A sheep shearing demonstration will take place from 12 noon until 1pm and there is also an opportunity to see a majestic Suffolk Punch working horse and the cattle, calves, ewes and lambs on the estate.

In contrast a Victorian Farm Day is taking place in the Bygones Museum where visitors can step back in time to celebrate Holkham’s Victorian heydays of farming.  A cast of characters from the past, including a blacksmith and equine expert, will bring the museum to life and talk about farming in days gone by.  Cooks, kitchen maids and bakers will also show the food and cooking methods used in Victorian times and Holkham’s gamekeepers will be on hand to keep an eye on any poachers.

Mark Bowyer, farm manager for the Holkham Estate, comments: “This is our second year where Holkham has participated in Open Farm Sunday and it is a great opportunity to welcome visitors to the estate, both young and old, and show them the modern methods we use in farming today.  Alongside this, it is interesting to see how farming was carried out in the past with our Victorian Farm Day in the museum demonstrating just how much things have changed.”

Open Farm Sunday is a free event. There is a car parking fee in Holkham Park of £2.50 for the day.

Tickets for the Bygones Museum and Walled Gardens are £7 for adults, £3.50 for children aged between two and 16 years or a family ticket for two adults and up to three children is £19.

Tickets which also include admission to the Hall as well as the Bygones Museum and Walled Gardens are £12 for adults, £6 for children aged between two and 16 years or a family ticket for two adults and up to three children is £33.

Hunstanton gets Blue Flag and Quality Coast Award

Monday, May 14th, 2012

Hunstanton Beach at low tide

Hunstanton Beach at low tide

Hunstanton has once again been successful in gaining both a Blue Flag and Quality Coast Award.

24 beaches across the East Coast of England were awarded Blue Flags and Quality Coast Awards by Keep Britain Tidy today*. In total 142 beaches across England gained awards this year and Hunstanton was one of just 36 beaches to have gained both a Blue Flag and Quality Coast Award.

The awards recognise high standards in beach management.

Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds, Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk Cabinet Member, said, “It is great news that Hunstanton has achieved these prestigious awards once again and further recognition of the quality of the resort. The flags are a clear symbol to visitors that the beach and facilities are well-managed and clean.”

Beaches are awarded the Blue Flag based on compliance with 32 criteria covering the following: environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management, safety and services.

Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, which is responsible for the Blue Flag scheme in England and the Quality Coast Awards, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that England has more Blue Flag beaches this year and we urge more holiday-makers to take advantage of the East of England’s award-winning seaside resorts this summer.

“It’s great to see that more beaches along our coastline have achieved high standards of excellence for visitors. With 24 beaches in the region receiving Blue Flags and Quality Coast Awards, what better way to holiday in the East of England than to visit one of these local award-winning beaches?”.

The news comes ahead of the extended bank holiday weekend in June when thousands of water sports enthusiasts are set to flock to Hunstanton to enjoy Lifestyles Festival (1-3 June). Once again the event will include the British Kitesurfing Association’s National Kitesurfing competition as well as workshops and demonstrations of a variety of extreme sports. For full details visit: www.lifestylesfestival.co.uk.

The Quality Coast Award and Blue Flag scheme are administered in England by Keep Britain Tidy. For more information visit www.keepbritaintidy.org.

Gamekeeper in the tweed

Gamekeeper in the tweed returns from a hunt at Holkham Estate

A tweed which has been the exclusive preserve of the Holkham Estate gamekeepers for almost ten years is now being made available to the public

The Holkham Estate has launched a selection of tweed products which features waistcoats, flat caps, dog beds and doorstops.  The clothing is being made by local gentlemen’s tailors, Goddard & Son, who also make the tweed suits worn by the estate’s gamekeepers on shoot days.

The shop was redesigned in 2010 and has a policy of supporting local artists, producers and suppliers and is an Associate Member of the Produced in Norfolk network.

Using the resources of the estate, for 2012 the shop has also introduced a range of corkscrews, bottle openers, butter knives and cufflinks which are made from the antlers of the Holkham deer herd. These unusual items sit alongside works of local art, interesting hats, bags and jewellery, as well as a range of delicious foods and other gifts.

Johanna Tennant, retail and projects manager at Holkham, said: “The shop provides a perfect showcase for local suppliers demonstrating the high quality of workmanship and product development which is happening across Norfolk.  Our first stop when sourcing goods for the shop is the local, small supplier.  If we are looking for additional items, we search within the region or elsewhere in the UK.  The Holkham tweed items are a subtle blend of warm, earthy colours and are already proving popular with our visitors.”

Visit www.holkham.co.uk for more information and for details of demonstration days in the gift shop which include food tastings, book signings and visits by local artists.

Holkham Hall in north Norfolk is providing events for everyone this May. Whether it’s celebrating the May Bank Holiday weekend, getting creative at one of the workshops, watching talented artisans demonstrate their skills, or getting close to nature with a wildlife walk, this stately home has it all.

‘May Day Celebrations’ on Sunday 6th and Monday 7th May will see the hall’s kitchen brought to life from 12 to 4pm with demonstrations of Victorian cookery led by Julia and Nigel Gant of 4and20Blackbirds. Visitors can watch the preparation of jellies and ice creams, water ices and marzipan fruits while learning about the food and ingredients popular during the Victorian era. In the Bygones Museum, children’s craft activities throughout both days will create a fun atmosphere. In the courtyard, traditional music and dancing and family games will entertain visitors. On Sunday 6th at 1pm and 3pm the Lobster Potties from Sheringham will go ‘potty’ with their traditional north Norfolk style of dancing and with some ‘North West’ and ‘Border’ styles thrown in for variety. More displays of Cotswold morris dancing by The King’s Morris of King’s Lynn will keep visitors amused on Bank Holiday Monday at 11am and 3pm.

Those who want to visit Holkham before May Day can see and meet some of the talented local artisan suppliers whose works are for sale in the Holkham Gift Shop. Liz from Ebenezer Cottage will be offering tastings of her delicious jams, chutneys and cordials on 3rd May from 10am to 3pm and from noon on 6th May artist Stuart Roy will be on hand to show his original paintings of the Norfolk landscape. Or join the ‘Deer Discovery Walk’ on Saturday 5th May from 10am –11.30am when Deer Keeper Glyn Ingram will take visitors on an informal guided walk around Holkham Park, where they will learn some interesting facts about the herd of deer. Discover how the behaviour of the fallow and red deer changes with the seasons and how the management of the parkland has made it the sanctuary for wildlife that it is today.

For those more interested in indulging their design and creative skills there is an opportunity to join the ‘Make a Fascinating Fascinator’ workshop, on Saturday 12th May from 10am to 12.30pm or 2pm to 4.30pm. Led by Suzi Stow the two half-day workshops will teach the basic skills of fascinator design and making. Whether it’s for a special occasion or simply for a love of dressing up, this practical and sociable class will help turn ideas into reality and you will have your own fashionable design to take home.

An informative day is just a click away with an  ‘Amazing Abstracts Photography Workshop’ for adults specialising in the photography of spring plants and architecture run by professional  natural history and environmental photographer Nigel Downer on Wednesday 16th May from 10am to 4pm. How to get the best from a camera and techniques to produce that perfect image are just two of the subjects Nigel will be covering.

In the evening on Wednesday 16th May, from 6.30pm to 8pm, visitors can go ‘Down Memory Lane’ with a presentation by Juliet Webster who, when moving house found a diary, photographs and poem written by Honor Elwes. Maypole Dancing at Bircham Windmill

Bircham Windmill is a super day out for all the family.  Climbing to the top of this beautifully restored mill is a real experience.  See all the machinery inside and hear stories from days gone by.  Adjoining the mill is the original bakery where bread and cakes are baked daily, visitors can enjoy our fare onsite or take it home for tea.  Children can have a go and make some bread.  The tearooms have been completely revamped for 2012, with a new counter and kitchen. Previous visitors to Bircham Windmill are going to be wowed by the makeover!  We are now able to serve a variety of hot lunches as well as filled rolls, soup, pasties and of course our homemade cakes and cream teas.

Animals living at the windmill now include ‘Pebbles’ the donkey alongside rabbits, guinea pigs, ponies goats and sheep.  Sheep milking occurs daily at 2pm and visitors are welcome to watch. Cheeses are made from the sheep milk most Saturdays and visitors can talk to the cheese maker and see the milk turn into cheese before their eyes.  Cheese is also available to buy from the mill and also from many local delis and farm shops.

A member of staff will be available for animal talks on high days and holidays and to give pony rides.  Come along and meet the animals, get up close and stroke them, learn a bit more about them.

For the children there is a play area, garden toys and quizzes to keep them happy.  Come and relax.

Entrance to Bircham Windmill museum and the garden is £4.50 for adults, (£1.50 garden only) £3 for children (£1 garden only) and £3.75 for retired (£1.25 garden only).  Season tickets are available and during school holidays we do a free weekly return deal where visitors pay once and then return as often as they like for the remainder of the week.
