Smithdon High School students help launch Lifestyles Festival 2012

Posted by Borough Council of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk

Kings Lynn Council logoOrganisers of Hunstanton’s Lifestyles Festival were joined on Hunstanton beach (28 March 2012) by pupils from Smithdon High School and National Amateur Ladies Champion Danielle Durrant to launch the 2012 event, which takes place over the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend on 1, 2 & 3 June.

The event, which first took place in 2005, is taking place a bit earlier this year to take advantage of the tides.  And the new date isn’t the only change, as Sports Development Officer Tony Devenish, who has been involved with the event since the beginning, is moving on to a new role, leaving the organisation of this year’s event in the capable hands of the Lifestyles Association and the borough council’s sports development unit.

Tony said:  “Lifestyles is a great event to be involved with.  I’ve watched it grow and grow over the years and I’ve seen the impact it’s had in the town and also watched some of the talent develop as a result of people having a go at the sports on offer.  I know I won’t actually be organising this year’s event, as I’m moving to a new role, but I’ll still be hanging out and soaking up the festival atmosphere.”

This year’s event will include the usual mix of high-adrenalin activities such as skateboarding, kitesurfing, windsurfing, climbing and inline skating, alongside street dance, stalls and stands, the classic Volks Wagon show on The Green and the best of local and regional bands.  There will be a full programme of have-a-go sessions for local schools on Friday 1 June, then competitions, demonstrations and public have-a-go sessions throughout the Saturday and Sunday, including Round 2 of the British Kite Surfing Association National Freestyle Competition and an open windsurfing competition organised by Quayside Windsurfers.

Borough Council Cabinet Member Elizabeth Nockolds said: “This event began as a sports event, designed to encourage people to get involved in non mainstream sports and to provide people with an opportunity to have a go at something they might not otherwise get the chance to try.  The event has grown over the years to incorporate other activities including dance and music and whilst we are keen to continue those additional activities, this year we are making a small charge for entry to the music events to help off-set the cost of putting them on.  We really hope that people will understand the need for this charge and will continue to support this popular event.”

More information about the event, including the full music line up and details about how to book campsites, will be published over the coming weeks on the Lifestyles Festival website www.lifestylesfestival.co.uk, with regular updates via Twitter @LifestylesFest and Facebook www.facebook.com/lifestylesfestival.

Council asks Eric Pickles to call-in incinerator planning application

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

Posted by Borough Council of Kings Lynn & West Norfolk

Kings Lynn Council logoThe Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk has issued a formal request to the Secretary of State for Community and Local Government to call in the planning application for the proposed incinerator in King’s Lynn.

Borough Council Leader Cllr Nick Daubney explained: “This matter is of such significance that we believe it should not be determined by the Norfolk County Council but should instead be the subject of a full public inquiry led by an independent planning inspector.”

“Norfolk County Council may have to pay financial penalties of up to £20.3 million if planning permission is not awarded. People, not only in West Norfolk but across the county, belief that this gives the impression of bias, and therefore the only way to ensure that all public concerns are addressed is for the matter to be taken out of the hands of Norfolk County Council and instead dealt with by a government-appointed independent planning inspector. The borough council has put together a well-argued case, setting out under four main headings the planning reasons why the application should be called in.

These are:

a) the saddlebow site is in conflict with both local and national policies for dealing with waste in a sustainable way. The proposal to burn all of Norfolk’s waste in the western edge of the county goes against the proximity principle.

b) the borough council believes that the sequential testing undertaken by Norfolk County Council, to ascertain whether there are other suitable sites for such an incinerator in areas at lower risk of flooding, is flawed.

c) the county council is currently consulting on their draft Waste Development Site Specific Allocations development plan document. Whilst the application site has been identified within this document, the borough council believes that there are alternatives to the application proposals both in terms of scale and location which are preferable in sustainability terms. To approve the application before this document is signed off runs contrary to the principles of prematurity as well as the Localism Act.

d) Norfolk Wildlife Trust is recommending a precautionary approach, pending further clarification on the protected species surveys carried out and the methodology adopted in terms of impact on the Roydon Common SAC. A call in would enable an appropriate assessment to be carried out. The letter also cites the widespread opposition to the proposals from public bodies, individuals, the borough council and local MPs. In addition, projections are that the availability of municipal waste from within the county is decreasing as more waste is recycled and recyclable and borough council officers predict that within 10 years it will fall below the 170,000 which the county council has contracted to supply. The county council has made a bad commercial deal because it will pay for more waste to be processed than is actually processed and it will likely suffer financial penalties.

Cllr Daubney added: “This is the only right thing to do. Local people have lost confidence in Norfolk County Council’s ability to judge this application in a fair and transparent way. The only way that it can properly be assessed is through a public inquiry.”

“People can support this request for a call in by writing to Eric Pickles and urging him to trigger a full public inquiry and putting the matter before an independent planning inspector.”

The address to write to is:

Maypole Dancing at Bircham Windmill

Maypole Dancing at Bircham Windmill

Bircham Windmill is a super day out for all the family.  Climbing to the top of this beautifully restored mill is a real experience.  See all the machinery inside and hear stories from days gone by.  Adjoining the mill is the original bakery where bread and cakes are baked daily, visitors can enjoy our fare onsite or take it home for tea.  Children can have a go and make some bread.  The tearooms have been completely revamped for 2012, with a new counter and kitchen. Previous visitors to Bircham Windmill are going to be wowed by the makeover!  We are now able to serve a variety of hot lunches as well as filled rolls, soup, pasties and of course our homemade cakes and cream teas.

Animals living at the windmill now include ‘Pebbles’ the donkey alongside rabbits, guinea pigs, ponies goats and sheep.  Sheep milking occurs daily at 2pm and visitors are welcome to watch. Cheeses are made from the sheep milk most Saturdays and visitors can talk to the cheese maker and see the milk turn into cheese before their eyes.  Cheese is also available to buy from the mill and also from many local delis and farm shops.

A member of staff will be available for animal talks on high days and holidays and to give pony rides.  Come along and meet the animals, get up close and stroke them, learn a bit more about them.

For the children there is a play area, garden toys and quizzes to keep them happy.  Come and relax.

Entrance to Bircham Windmill museum and the garden is £4.50 for adults, (£1.50 garden only) £3 for children (£1 garden only) and £3.75 for retired (£1.25 garden only).  Season tickets are available and during school holidays we do a free weekly return deal where visitors pay once and then return as often as they like for the remainder of the week.

Parking and entrance to the tearooms, bakery and gift shop is free.

Hunstanton, Downham and Kings Lynn to talk shop

Friday, February 10th, 2012

Posted by Borough Council of West Norfolk & Kings Lynn

Kings Lynn Council logoThe challenges facing high street retailers are set to be discussed at a series of events taking place this March.

The Let’s Talk Shop events, which are being organised by the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk in conjunction with the local Chambers of Trade and the King’s Lynn Town Centre Partnership, will enable retailers to discuss some of the issues and challenges that they are facing, to share with other retailers ideas about what’s working and to work together to identify possible solutions.

There will be a Let’s Talk Shop event in each of West Norfolk’s market towns.

Hunstanton, Town Hall, 5 March 2012
Downham Market, Town Hall, 15 March 2012
King’s Lynn, Duke’s Head Hotel, 20 March 2012

Cllr Nick Daubney, Leader of the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, said: “There is no doubt that these are tough times for retailers.  There is continued economic uncertainty, a rise in internet shopping and household budgets are being squeezed.  If we want our high streets to remain vibrant we need to work together to attract shoppers into our town centres and to ensure that they spend money while they are there.”

“I would urge retailers to book a place at one of the events and to come along and talk shop with us.  We all need to undertstand what the issues are and only then can we all work together on initiatives that could really make a difference.”

Each event will begin at 6pm and should last about 1 1/2 hours.  Light refreshments will be provided and the events are free to attend.

Retailers wishing to attend one of the Let’s Talk Shop events should register via the council’s website at www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/retail or by calling 01553 616251.

Funding available for Olympic celebrations

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Posted by Borough Council of West Norfolk & Kings Lynn

Kings Lynn Council logo2012 is set to be a memorable year with the Queen celebrating her Diamond Jubilee and London hosting the 2012 Olympics.

To help communities in West Norfolk celebrate these two historic occasions, small grants of up to £200 are being made available to local community groups, clubs, parish and town councils, and charity organisations who are hoping to organise Olympic- or Jubilee-related activities or events.

Just over £20,000 has been earmarked for community activities.  To bid for funding, groups should visit the Norfolk Community Foundation website – www.norfolkfoundation.com/king’s-lynn-west-norfolk.htm and complete the short application form.  Applications must be received by 24 February in order to be considered.

Borough Council Cabinet Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds said:  “We hope the availability of this fund will encourage people to plan events and activities in their area that the whole community can get involved in and enjoy.  It’s been a tough few years for many people and this is a great opportunity to get together with friends and neighbours to celebrate this special year.”

“Whether you are planning a jubilee street party or a sports induction course or taster session, if it involves the local community you could be eligible for a £200 grant.”

Applications will be considered by the funding panel in March and the funds released to successful applicants in April.

Helpful information and advice on what to do if you are planning a street party or other event can be found on the Borough Council’s website : http://www.west-norfolk.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=26552
