Kings Lynn on London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Route

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Posted by Borough Council of Kings Lynn & West Norfolk

The Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk is delighted to announce that the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Route will be travelling through the borough on its way from Peterborough to Norwich.  King’s Lynn, South Wootton and the Rudhams will be hosting the torch and inviting people from across the borough to welcome the Olympic Flame.

Activities are being planned so members of the surrounding communities can attend to share in the excitement that the Torch Relay will bring.

King’s Lynn, South Wootton, East Rudham, West Rudham, Fakenham, Holt, Sheringham, Aylesham and Norwich are the key Norfolk locationsannounced by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) through which the Olympic Flame will be carried by Torchbearers during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay which is presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung.  LOCOG has worked closely with representatives from a number of sectors in the eastern region to devise the route.  In all there are more than a thousand villaes, towns and cities along the route.

Borough Council Cabinet Member Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds was delighted that the Olympic Torch Relay is to be hosted by King’s Lynn, South Wootton and the Rudhams, allowing West Norfolk residents a unique and very special opportunity to witness the spectacle of the Olympic Flame and to mark the countdown to the London 2012 Olympics.

Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG said: ‘We are thrilled to confirm that King’s Lynn, South Wootton & the Rudhams will act as host locations for the Olympic Flame, extending an invitation to people in West Norfolk to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay during its journey around the UK.  This is the UK’s moment to shine and I want to encourage people across West Norfolk to start planning how they can be part of this once in a lifetime opportunity and show their support for the inspirational Torchbearers chosen to carry the Olympic Flame as we count down to the start of the Olympic Games.

The 70-day Olympic Torch Relay, will start at Land’s End, Cornwall on the morning of 19 May 2012. On leaving Land’s End, the Olympic Flame will travel an estimated 8,000 miles around the UK giving thousands of communities and individuals their moment to shine as the Olympic Flame comes to a place near them.

In announcing the villages, towns and cities LOCOG has realised the objective of taking the Olympic Flame to within an hour’s journey time of 95% of the population. In fact, over 95% of the population will be within just 10 miles of the Olympic Flame next summer. The street by street detail of the route will be confirmed next year.

There is an interactive map at www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelaymap to help you find your nearest community through which the Olympic Flame will be carried.

On the final day of the Olympic Torch Relay, it is LOCOG’s intention that the Olympic Flame will travel down the River Thames as it makes its way to the Olympic Stadium on 27 July 2012 for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, signifying the official start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Olympic Flame will be carried across the UK by 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers each of whom will have a story of personal achievement and/or contribution to the local community. In December this year, successful nominees will be contacted with a conditional offer and final Torchbearer places will start to be confirmed from February 2012 onwards.

LOCOG has launched two public participation programmes. The ‘Local Leaders’ initiative is an invitation to people to take the 2012 Games into their community and create their own celebrations next year, for the Olympic Torch Relay and other key moments during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. People are encouraged to sign up to the Local Leader programme at www.london2012.com/localleaders to receive further information on a range of themed celebration ideas focusing on the Opening Ceremony evening, gardening, quizzes and barbecues and be in the front row to receive free London 2012 event materials to support events.

Also recently launched is the ‘Get Set for the Olympic Torch Relay’ education resource, available to all schools registered with Get Set, London 2012’s official education programme. The aim of the resource is to provide schools with cross-curricular resources aimed at teachers working with 3 to 16 year olds to aid learning around history of Olympic Torch Relays, the design of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay and the Torch itself. A further education resource will launch next year to encourage schools to plan a welcome for the Olympic Flame and show support for the Torchbearers.   Lloyds TSB, official Education Partner of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, have launched their Flame Followers schools programme which compliments the Get Set resources, and gives schools once-in-a-lifetime opportunities be right at the heart of the excitement and celebrations of the Relay.

Contacting your local police

Click here to download and print information about a new way to contact your police

Norfolk Constabulary has introduced a new telephone number for people who want to talk to the police about non-urgent issues.  Instead of ringing the current switchboard number of 0845 456 4567, people should dial 101.

The introduction of 101 in Norfolk is part of a nationwide initiative which will see all forces adopting the number by the end of the year. It is designed to offer one easy way to contact your local police force to report non-emergency crimes, disorder or anti-social behaviour or to speak to your local police officers.

Assistant Chief Constable Kevin Wilkins said: “Everyone knows to ring 999 in an emergency – but research shows that only half of the public know how to contact their local police if they want to talk to them about less urgent issues. “The introduction of an easy-to-remember, three-digit number should help address this.

“By the end of the year, people will be able to use 101 to contact their local police force’s non-emergency service, wherever they are in England and Wales.

“It is also hoped that the introduction of 101 will help divert more non-urgent calls away from the 999 system, freeing up call handlers to deal with genuine emergencies.”

The new number should be used to report issues which don’t require an emergency response. For example, people should ring 101 if:

•         their vehicle has been stolen;
•         their property has been damaged;
•         they suspect drug use or dealing;
•         if they want to give the police information about crime in their area; or
•         if they would like to speak to a local police officer.

101 will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When calling 101, the system determines the caller’s location and connects them to the police force covering that area.

A recorded message announces which police force the caller is being connected to – and gives them a choice if they are on a boundary between two or more forces.

Police call handlers in the local force contact centre will then answer the call and respond appropriately.  There is also an option of speaking to an operator, if the caller wishes to contact another force.

Calls from landlines and mobile networks cost 15 pence per call, no matter what time of day or the duration of the call.

People who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired can textphone 18001 101.

The new 101 service is not for emergencies. In an emergency, people should always ring 999 for immediate police assistance.  An emergency is where:

•         life is in danger
•         a serious offence is in progress
•         a suspect is at a scene
•         an alleged offender is identified at any location
•         there is an imminent likelihood of violence/damage to a person’s property
•         there is a serious road traffic collision

Sandringham Walk for Hunstanton & Heacham Guides, Brownies & Rainbows

Sandringham Walk for Hunstanton & Heacham Guides, Brownies & Rainbows

On Sunday 16th October the Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from Hunstanton and Heacham, along with  leaders and families took our four-legged friends on a Sponsored Walk in Sandringham in support of Guide Dogs for the Blind. After the walk we were treated to a hot dog and a mug of soup, prepared by our Trefoil Guild – with treats for dogs too! It was a lovely sunny afternoon and the good turnout (around 75 people) helped us to raise in the region of £400 with more sponsor money still to come.

The Kings Lynn fund-raising Branch also had a stall which was very successful and Cynthia Easeman brought along her Guide dog, Olivia to meet everyone. The Group are always happy to come along to group meetings etc with their dogs and to show some of the useful aids available to make life easier for partially sighted people.

Lavender Hill Mob appear at Norwich Cathedral

Lavender Hill Mob and "Blake" at Norwich Cathedral

Lavender Hill Mob and "Blake" at Norwich Cathedral

Local Fetes, local churches,  residential homes, the Princess Theatre, Corn Exchange, Hunstanton and Kings Lynn Town Halls, private gardens, Norwich City Football Club are just  a small selection of venues the Lavender Hill Mob Theatre Company have performed at.  However, on Saturday, 8 October 2011, it was an honour for the Lavender Hill Mob to be invited by the Royal British Legion to appear at Norwich Cathedral. I don’t think that any of us went straight to sleep that night, we were all on such a ‘high’ when we got home!  A few of the photos are on our website as are the highlights of the short film of our youngsters in the cathedral.   My ‘guestimate’ of the amount of people in the audience was about five hundred and to have all those people giving the group a standing ovation at the end was a tremendous feeling, not just for me, but for all our kids and adults too!  I had to hold it together as I was filming so if you see the camera shake on the video, I apologise – it was very moving.  The song ‘Wish Me Luck’ brought back some very poignant memories for many in the audience, so there were many tears too!

Besides being at the cathedral, another highlight was meeting ‘Blake’ who are a world famous group of four young men (ladies you missed this treat!) who sing classical and pop music in harmony and have made several albums over the past few years and appeared in many famous places.  Nessun Dorma and Jerusalem were just two songs from their list they sung in the second half of the concert.  Secret arrangements had been made for our youngsters to meet them for a photocall and autographs, so that was an excellent end to a superb evening.  Our coach took everyone home, but four of us stayed behind to see ‘Blake’ perform and to see the evening to the very end.  We did stay longer than anticipated though, as someone had locked the Cathedral gates, thus creating a tail back of cars who had parked in the private car park, which meant we were locked in!!  But that’s another story…….!

Many thanks to Colin Kemp, John Crisford and the British Legion, for inviting us and arranging such a superb concert.  Thanks too to the Cathedral staff for their kindness, patience and help with various things during the day and for allowing the concert to take place in a beautiful venue.

Christmas Theatre adds a bit of sparkle to that excitingly festive time of year.  Holkham Hall is delighted to offer a unique adaptation of  The Snow Queen on Saturday, 17th December (matinee performance 2pm and evening performance 6.30pm).

This classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen will be performed by Quantum Theatre in the spectacular setting of the Marble Hall and tells the endearing story of the devoted friendship between a little boy Kay and little girl Gerda. Kay’s grandmother tells them the story of the Snow Queen and a mirror that magnifies all the bad and ugly aspects in people. A tragedy occurs when one summer’s day a splinter from the mirror lodges in Kay’s heart and puts him under the Snow Queen’s spell, changing his personality to cruel and aggressive. As winter arrives, the Snow Queen dramatically appears and whisks Kay away to her palace at the North Pole. His disappearance is a mystery and Gerda sets out to look for him encountering danger along the way. She finally rescues Kay when she reaches the Snow Queen’s palace and breaks the spell. As they travel home together they find that nothing has changed, except themselves, as they have grown up and it’s summer once more.

There will be two performances of this play – a matinee performance at 2pm and an evening performance at 6.30pm. The majority of seating is situated in the main auditorium on the ground floor, there is also limited seating in the upstairs gallery which has restricted vision. The performance is a family production aimed at all ages and will last approximately 2 hours (including interval).

Small businesses benefit from extended Small Business Rate Relief Scheme

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Posted by Hunstanton Chamber of Trade

The Chancellor of the Exchequer announced at the Budget that the temporary, more generous Small Business Rate Relief Scheme is to be extended. Originally this extra help was going to be available from 1 October 2010 and was due to end on 30 September 2011, however this has now been extended to 30 September 2012.  This will greatly benefit Hunstanton businesses.

Hunstanton Chamber of Trade are advised that ratepayers who are currently in receipt of Small Business Rate Relief will receive new bills early October 2011 for remaining period of 2011/12. These will show the value of relief that has been awarded to you and what your instalments for the rest of this financial year will be.

For clarity we detail below what has changed:

If your Rateable Value is £6,000 or below your relief increased from 50% to 100%. Between £6,001 and £12,000 your relief (approximately) doubled.
The eligibility criteria has not changed (please see our ‘Business Rate Reliefs’ page for more information on eligibility for the relief).

Will I have to apply for the increased relief?

If you are already in receipt of Small Business Rate Relief the changes will have automatically been made to your account.
If you are not currently getting Small Business Rate Relief, but believe you may be entitled, please either complete the online application form or contact the Council.

What will happen in September 2012?

Your annual non domestic rate bill for 2012/13 will be issued in March 2012 and it will reflect the full year’s liability including the different levels of relief up to 30 September 2012 and after 1 October 2012.  The instalments will reflect the amount payable in each period.  Effectively the instalments for the first six months of the year will be lower (or nil if your Rateable Value is below £6,000) and for the second part of the year will be higher reflecting the reduced amount of relief.

I would like to start paying the amount due for the year now?

Please contact us either by phone, email or letter (please refer to your bill for contact details) and we will amend your instalment plan for you.
I normally pay by direct debit; will I need to set up a new plan?

If you currently pay by Direct Debit, this will continue as long as your bill shows your method of payment as direct debit and you have not cancelled your direct debit with your bank.
