Victorian Cookery Day at Holkham Hall

Holkham Hall in north Norfolk is providing events for everyone this May. Whether it’s celebrating the May Bank Holiday weekend, getting creative at one of the workshops, watching talented artisans demonstrate their skills, or getting close to nature with a wildlife walk, this stately home has it all.

‘May Day Celebrations’ on Sunday 6th and Monday 7th May will see the hall’s kitchen brought to life from 12 to 4pm with demonstrations of Victorian cookery led by Julia and Nigel Gant of 4and20Blackbirds. Visitors can watch the preparation of jellies and ice creams, water ices and marzipan fruits while learning about the food and ingredients popular during the Victorian era. In the Bygones Museum, children’s craft activities throughout both days will create a fun atmosphere. In the courtyard, traditional music and dancing and family games will entertain visitors. On Sunday 6th at 1pm and 3pm the Lobster Potties from Sheringham will go ‘potty’ with their traditional north Norfolk style of dancing and with some ‘North West’ and ‘Border’ styles thrown in for variety. More displays of Cotswold morris dancing by The King’s Morris of King’s Lynn will keep visitors amused on Bank Holiday Monday at 11am and 3pm.

Those who want to visit Holkham before May Day can see and meet some of the talented local artisan suppliers whose works are for sale in the Holkham Gift Shop. Liz from Ebenezer Cottage will be offering tastings of her delicious jams, chutneys and cordials on 3rd May from 10am to 3pm and from noon on 6th May artist Stuart Roy will be on hand to show his original paintings of the Norfolk landscape. Or join the ‘Deer Discovery Walk’ on Saturday 5th May from 10am –11.30am when Deer Keeper Glyn Ingram will take visitors on an informal guided walk around Holkham Park, where they will learn some interesting facts about the herd of deer. Discover how the behaviour of the fallow and red deer changes with the seasons and how the management of the parkland has made it the sanctuary for wildlife that it is today.

For those more interested in indulging their design and creative skills there is an opportunity to join the ‘Make a Fascinating Fascinator’ workshop, on Saturday 12th May from 10am to 12.30pm or 2pm to 4.30pm. Led by Suzi Stow the two half-day workshops will teach the basic skills of fascinator design and making. Whether it’s for a special occasion or simply for a love of dressing up, this practical and sociable class will help turn ideas into reality and you will have your own fashionable design to take home.

An informative day is just a click away with an  ‘Amazing Abstracts Photography Workshop’ for adults specialising in the photography of spring plants and architecture run by professional  natural history and environmental photographer Nigel Downer on Wednesday 16th May from 10am to 4pm. How to get the best from a camera and techniques to produce that perfect image are just two of the subjects Nigel will be covering.

In the evening on Wednesday 16th May, from 6.30pm to 8pm, visitors can go ‘Down Memory Lane’ with a presentation by Juliet Webster who, when moving house found a diary, photographs and poem written by Honor Elwes. Honor was one of three young ladies touring Norfolk in a yellow horse-drawn caravan, camping all the way. Visitors are invited to join Juliet at the Stables Café 100 years on from this memorable tour for an entertaining evening of poetry, pictures and places, reliving the tour in the summer of 1912.

21st Village Games to be Launched 17 April 2012

Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

Posted by Kings Lynn & West Norfolk Borough Council

Kings Lynn Borough Council logollage Sports Managers past and present will gather at Lynnsport tonight to launch the 21st Village Games and to look back over the event’s 20-year history.

The Village Games (known then as the Inter Village Games) began life in 1992 just after Lynnsport was built.  They were a reincarnation of the former village games that used to take place in the 1980s at King Edward VII school in King’s Lynn.  They were designed to encourage people in the rural villages to play sport and also to enable them to come to Lynnsport to use the facilities.

Over the last 20 years the format of the games has changed very little, although some sports no longer take place and new ones such as archery and rounders have been added.

Roger Partridge, Sports Development Manager, who has been involved with the (Inter) Village Games since the beginning, said: “It’s a format that works really well.  Villages appoint a team manager and then draw together a team to take part in any or all of the sports available.  Some people take part for fun and some are really competitive.

“We’ve had some excellent support over the years from organisers, including Geoff Sturgeon and Graham Rogerson who’ve organised the badminton and table tennis for the past 20 years.  And none of it would be possible without the Village Sports team managers who encourage people from their villages to take part.  One manager who stands out in particular is Clare Peak who raised a team from Harpley and Houghton each year from 1994 to 2009, winning the small village trophy in 1996.

“Great Massingham, lead by Malcolm Hipkin, were the domineering force on at least 10 occasions, but more recently Docking has become the force to be reckoned with, having won the small village trophy for the last 6 years.”

The games are split into two categories to make the competition fair – small village  (under 1250 on the electoral roll) and medium village (1251 – 4250 on the electoral roll).  Up to four parishes can join together to form a village team.

In 2010, thanks to a £550,000 lottery award secured by Active Norfolk, the Inter Village Games programme was rolled out across the county and reborn as the Village Games.   Each district has its own heat and then the winners for each category go on to represent their district at the county finals,

This year, the West Norfolk heat of the Village Games will take place at Lynnsport on Sunday, 24 June.  The deadline for entries is 25 May.  The winners will compete in the county finals on 15 July at the UEA Sports Centre.

Borough Council Cabinet Member Cllr Elizabeth Nockolds said: “We’re hoping for a bumper turnout for this year’s Village Games.  With the London Olympics in the summer I hope that people feel inspired to get involved with sport.  People can choose which of the 13 different sports they want to compete in and with everything on offer from 5-a-side football, rounders and netball, through to indoor bowls and archery, there really is something for everyone.”

For more information about the village games and to download an entry form, visit www.intervillagegames.co.uk, call Amy East on 07795 301526 or Roger Partridge on 01553 818017.

Over 250 classic cars will arrive in the heart of Hunstanton from 11am onwards on Sunday, 22 April 2012 and assemble in Southend Road car park (opposite Tesco).  Plans for the rally include some wonderful specimens on view on the Lower Green and some driving through the town centre.

The event organiser is Roy Beckley working with David Morton (Hunstanton’s Resort Operations Manager).

It will be a great chance to drool over the cars we wished we had in our youth and support a worthy cause – The Air Ambulance.

“Steel Magnolias” live at Hunstanton’s Princess Theatre 18-19 May

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Posted by Princess Theatre Club

This merry month of May, the Princess Theatre Club affirms its determination to ‘keep live theatre alive’ in West Norfolk by presenting for your delectation a marvellous play which took the USA by storm. Later it became a successful feature film starring six of Hollywood’s best actresses and including (among much else) some gunplay, a pool full of stolen magnolias, a mangy dog named Rhett and — oh, yes, let’s not forget — a blood-red “‘groom’s cake” shaped like an armadillo! Now, six of our own local ladies undertake those same roles in ‘the funniest play ever to make you cry’ — STEEL MAGNOLIAS, by Robert Harling. Its theme is the circle of life and the way people rally round to support each other in bad times and good, passing milestones such as love and marriage, birth and death, all seasoned with a lot of laughter, some gossip and scandal, and a few tears. Bring your tissues if you’re ‘mu-hearted’ (as we say in Norfolk).

Directors are Mick Yates and Jane Bean and the cast comprises Jane Bean, Kate Roberts, Mary Mackie, Elaine Verweymeren, Sharon Yates and Pearl Carpenter. Come and share the fun taking place in and around Truvy’s Beauty Shop in Chinquapin parish, Louisiana. ‘Y’all will be made real welcome, y’hear?’

In rehearsal, Jane, Elaine and Mary

In rehearsal, Jane, Elaine and Mary

There will be three chances to see the play — Friday 18th May at 7.30 p.m., and two performances on Saturday 19th May, at 2.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.

Tickets cost £10, concessions £9, with an additional 10% discount for PTC members. They are available at the door before each performance.  As from Friday, 20 April 2012 you can also buy tickets on line at: www.thelittleboxoffice.com/princess.

If you have yet to enjoy one of our productions, why not give us a try? And tell all your friends. Live theatre is a precious asset in Hunstanton. Use it, or lose it.

A busy month for The Princess Theatre Club

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Posted by Mary Mackie, The Princess Theatre Club

As you may know, Hunstanton’s Princess Theatre is lighting up again, promising a scintillating programme of entertainment this summer season. Hooray!! We of the Princess Theatre Club are delighted and wish the new management team every success. Our November production was the last event staged before the theatre’s darkening and our spring production will be the first to throw open the doors as a taster before the official grand re-opening on 1st June. More about that production later.

First, congratulations and cheers to Sharon Yates, winner of our competition to ‘Write a One-Act Play’. Her hilarious hospital comedy, titled ‘Infirmary, Infirmary… (they’ve all got it infirmary)’ was judged to be the best of the entries.

Many people in Hunstanton will know Sharon. She has been a member of the Princess Theatre Club for many years and is equally active with the Lavender Hill Mob and the panto company. How she found time also to write a play, amid all her work and family commitments, is a tribute to her indomitable devotion to all things thespian. She will be directing her new play as our entry in this year’s Adjudicated Drama Festival, so watch for details of that — the drama festival is great fun to watch, very cheap, and deserves a bigger audience. Do try it.

And if you’re interested in taking part (Sharon needs a lot of people!!) please get in touch. Rehearsals begin right after our main production.

Anyway, well done, Sharon. We look forward to more scripts from you.

Thank you, too, to all the budding writers who participated. Get your thinking caps on again because we may hold another competition before long.

The Princess Theatre Club nominated – NODA AWARDS EVENT

Another happy piece of news concerns the NODA East Awards, distributed at a luncheon on Sunday 29th April, at the Radisson Blu Hotel at Stansted Airport. As I write, a small team of PTC members is poised to attend in hope of picking up the award for Best Production. Our version of “’Allo, ‘Allo” has been entered in this category. Well done all, especially director Mick Yates.

What’s more, our printed programme for ‘Night Must Fall’ has already been awarded second prize in its section. Congratulations to Elaine Verweymeren, who edited the programme and designed the graphics for the cover.

‘POETRY FOR ALL’ — Town Hall, 16th May

PTC Poetry meeting on 21st March 2012

PTC Poetry meeting on 21st March 2012

Join us at Hunstanton Town Hall on 16th May for a happy hour or two in good company, allied with some rhymes and reminiscences (mostly humorous) plus home-made cakes with tea or coffee. We start at 10.30 a.m. and, with a pause for refreshments and chat, we usually disperse around 12.30. These get-togethers are organized by the Theatre Club and led by local author Mary Mackie, assisted by husband Chris and other friends of the PTC. We are also indebted to the committee of Hunstanton and District Festival of Arts for their continued support.

The Princess Theatre Club meets on the third Wednesday of every other month (that is, six times a year) and read or recite poems and rhymes of all kinds. Refreshments are available at minimal prices and, instead of an entry fee, we invite donations for club funds. A recent innovation, much enjoyed, has been sharing off-the-cuff memories inspired by our suggested theme of the day. In March, for instance, we celebrated ‘Memories’ and since some expert had announced that 1976 was the happiest year in the UK, we recounted personal memories of that year.

In May our suggested theme is ‘Childhood’ so we anticipate lots of amusing anecdotes along with readings to suit the mood. All YOU have to do is turn up and enjoy the fun. Just come and listen, if you prefer. Or look out a favourite poem and bring it with you to read aloud. No pressure, no boring ‘business’, just merry sociability. Come and try it. Everyone is welcome.

And watch for news of a very special ‘Jubilee’ version of our gatherings, as part of the town’s celebrations in June

Smithdon High School students help launch Lifestyles Festival 2012

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

Posted by Borough Council of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk

Kings Lynn Council logoOrganisers of Hunstanton’s Lifestyles Festival were joined on Hunstanton beach (28 March 2012) by pupils from Smithdon High School and National Amateur Ladies Champion Danielle Durrant to launch the 2012 event, which takes place over the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend on 1, 2 & 3 June.

The event, which first took place in 2005, is taking place a bit earlier this year to take advantage of the tides.  And the new date isn’t the only change, as Sports Development Officer Tony Devenish, who has been involved with the event since the beginning, is moving on to a new role, leaving the organisation of this year’s event in the capable hands of the Lifestyles Association and the borough council’s sports development unit.

Tony said:  “Lifestyles is a great event to be involved with.  I’ve watched it grow and grow over the years and I’ve seen the impact it’s had in the town and also watched some of the talent develop as a result of people having a go at the sports on offer.  I know I won’t actually be organising this year’s event, as I’m moving to a new role, but I’ll still be hanging out and soaking up the festival atmosphere.”

This year’s event will include the usual mix of high-adrenalin activities such as skateboarding, kitesurfing, windsurfing, climbing and inline skating, alongside street dance, stalls and stands, the classic Volks Wagon show on The Green and the best of local and regional bands.  There will be a full programme of have-a-go sessions for local schools on Friday 1 June, then competitions, demonstrations and public have-a-go sessions throughout the Saturday and Sunday, including Round 2 of the British Kite Surfing Association National Freestyle Competition and an open windsurfing competition organised by Quayside Windsurfers.

Borough Council Cabinet Member Elizabeth Nockolds said: “This event began as a sports event, designed to encourage people to get involved in non mainstream sports and to provide people with an opportunity to have a go at something they might not otherwise get the chance to try.  The event has grown over the years to incorporate other activities including dance and music and whilst we are keen to continue those additional activities, this year we are making a small charge for entry to the music events to help off-set the cost of putting them on.  We really hope that people will understand the need for this charge and will continue to support this popular event.”

More information about the event, including the full music line up and details about how to book campsites, will be published over the coming weeks on the Lifestyles Festival website www.lifestylesfestival.co.uk, with regular updates via Twitter @LifestylesFest and Facebook www.facebook.com/lifestylesfestival.

Sponsorship Opportunities

The event is currently sponsored by Veolia Environmental Services, Hunstantanton Watersports and Lingo Design, with funding from Mars in the Community, Flux Family Fund and Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk.  Anyone interested in sponsoring the event should contact the Sports Development Unit on 01553 818015.

Trade Stands and Stalls

There is still some availability for trade stands and stalls for the weekend.  Information is available by contacting the Sports Development Unit on 01553 818015 .

Council asks Eric Pickles to call-in incinerator planning application

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

Posted by Borough Council of Kings Lynn & West Norfolk

Kings Lynn Council logoThe Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk has issued a formal request to the Secretary of State for Community and Local Government to call in the planning application for the proposed incinerator in King’s Lynn.

Borough Council Leader Cllr Nick Daubney explained: “This matter is of such significance that we believe it should not be determined by the Norfolk County Council but should instead be the subject of a full public inquiry led by an independent planning inspector.”

“Norfolk County Council may have to pay financial penalties of up to £20.3 million if planning permission is not awarded. People, not only in West Norfolk but across the county, belief that this gives the impression of bias, and therefore the only way to ensure that all public concerns are addressed is for the matter to be taken out of the hands of Norfolk County Council and instead dealt with by a government-appointed independent planning inspector. The borough council has put together a well-argued case, setting out under four main headings the planning reasons why the application should be called in.

These are:

a) the saddlebow site is in conflict with both local and national policies for dealing with waste in a sustainable way. The proposal to burn all of Norfolk’s waste in the western edge of the county goes against the proximity principle.

b) the borough council believes that the sequential testing undertaken by Norfolk County Council, to ascertain whether there are other suitable sites for such an incinerator in areas at lower risk of flooding, is flawed.

c) the county council is currently consulting on their draft Waste Development Site Specific Allocations development plan document. Whilst the application site has been identified within this document, the borough council believes that there are alternatives to the application proposals both in terms of scale and location which are preferable in sustainability terms. To approve the application before this document is signed off runs contrary to the principles of prematurity as well as the Localism Act.

d) Norfolk Wildlife Trust is recommending a precautionary approach, pending further clarification on the protected species surveys carried out and the methodology adopted in terms of impact on the Roydon Common SAC. A call in would enable an appropriate assessment to be carried out. The letter also cites the widespread opposition to the proposals from public bodies, individuals, the borough council and local MPs. In addition, projections are that the availability of municipal waste from within the county is decreasing as more waste is recycled and recyclable and borough council officers predict that within 10 years it will fall below the 170,000 which the county council has contracted to supply. The county council has made a bad commercial deal because it will pay for more waste to be processed than is actually processed and it will likely suffer financial penalties.

Cllr Daubney added: “This is the only right thing to do. Local people have lost confidence in Norfolk County Council’s ability to judge this application in a fair and transparent way. The only way that it can properly be assessed is through a public inquiry.”

“People can support this request for a call in by writing to Eric Pickles and urging him to trigger a full public inquiry and putting the matter before an independent planning inspector.”

The address to write to is:

The Right Honourable Eric Pickles MP Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Department of Communities and Local Government Eland House Bressenden Place London SW1E 5DU
